The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved over 10,000 new medical seats across government colleges and hospitals—a Rs 15,034 crore investment—marking a major step in expanding India’s healthcare workforce and infrastructure.
Setting a new benchmark in healthcare investment, the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 24, 2025, greenlit a substantial plan to add more than 10,000 medical seats in government colleges and hospitals throughout India. As mentioned in the Press Information Bureau release, this expansion includes 5,000 post-graduate and 5,023 undergraduate seats over the next four years, under Phase-III of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme. Aimed at realizing Modi’s vision of universal health coverage for 1.4 billion Indians, the initiative leverages existing infrastructure to cost-effectively scale up skilled medical workforce across urban, rural, and tribal areas.
India already boasts the largest number of medical colleges globally, with 808 institutions and more than 1,23,700 MBBS seats available today. Over the past decade alone, MBBS seat capacity grew by 127%, while postgraduate seats increased 143%—including new AIIMS approved under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. Recent regulatory reforms by the National Medical Commission have widened eligibility, making it easier to onboard qualified faculty and facilitate continued expansion in medical education.
The ripple effects of this massive initiative are expected to be profound—strengthening medical education, improving employment prospects in healthcare, and most crucially, bringing quality care within reach of millions who previously lacked access.

As referenced in the Press Information Bureau, such bold steps drive India’s evolution into a global medical hub and foster better health for all segments of the population.
