SEBI’s 2025 Investor Survey reveals a striking gap between rising market awareness and actual participation, with only 9.5% of Indian households investing in securities while 63% are aware of financial products. The study highlights prevailing risk-aversion, especially among Gen-Z, and calls for stronger financial education, improved digital access, and trust-building strategies to unlock India’s investment potential.
SEBI’s 2025 Survey Exposes Investment Gaps
SEBI’s recently released Investor Survey 2025 offers a detailed snapshot of the Indian investment landscape, drawing from over 90,000 households across cities and villages. Building on inputs from AMFI, NSE, BSE, NSDL, and CDSL, the survey uncovers a vast divide: while 213 million households know about securities market options, only 32.1 million—around 9.5%—actually participate.
A notable 80% of households prioritize capital preservation over chasing high returns, with 79% of Gen-Z families displaying surprising risk-aversion. Urban areas lead in participation (15%) versus rural districts (6%), and states like Delhi (20.7%) and Gujarat (15.4%) set the pace for securities market investment. Despite higher awareness, barriers remain, including process complexity, lack of financial knowledge, trust deficits, and fear of market losses.

SEBI’s findings highlight demand for simpler investment platforms, lower entry barriers, and financial education—particularly in regional languages. Just 36% of investors report moderate or high market knowledge, underlining the need for improved literacy. Social media, short-form videos, and regional language outreach appeal most to younger investors. Satisfaction with SEBI’s grievance systems is high, but overall awareness is limited, flagging opportunities for digital trust-building.
With 22% of non-investors intent on entering the market within a year, SEBI plans targeted outreach, especially for regions lagging in securities participation. The regulator aims to shape more inclusive strategies for investor protection, education, and responsible behavior.
