India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has celebrated a landmark achievement with its Sanchar Saathi portal, enabling the recovery of over 6 lakh lost and stolen mobile phones through a real-time, citizen-driven digital safety initiative. The platform now boasts a 61% increase in monthly recoveries within just 8 months, marking a new era of technology-enabled public empowerment and digital trust.
In a transformative leap for citizen digital safety, India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has surpassed a major milestone via its flagship initiative, the Sanchar Saathi portal, facilitating the recovery of more than 6 lakh lost and stolen mobile handsets. This achievement not only highlights the effectiveness of digital governance but also mirrors growing public faith in technology-fueled security measures. As pointed out by the Press Information Bureau, this digital safety net is making a real impact on everyday lives.
Sanchar Saathi’s ‘Block Your Lost/ Stolen Mobile Handset’ feature integrates the DoT, telecom providers, and state police in real-time, empowering citizens to quickly report, block, and trace stolen devices. As soon as a reported device is used with a new SIM, both the concerned citizen and the relevant police station receive automated alerts, expediting the recovery process. The numbers speak volumes: monthly handset recoveries soared from 28,115 in January 2025 to 45,243 in August, a 61% growth in eight months. This upward trend signals enhanced coordination and renewed citizen participation.
